Common Internet Service Types


There are many types of internet service types each with their own advantages and disadvantages.

Fibre Optic Internet

  • This is one of the fastest types of internet available.
  • It uses glass or plastic fibres to transmit data as light signals.
  • Fibre optic internet is less susceptible to interference and can provide high-speed connections over long distances.
  • Fibre optic is also more robust compared to other types of internet connections since it is usually buried underground.

Cable Internet

  • Cable internet is one of the most widely available types of internet.
  • It is installed in urban and suburban areas.
  • It uses coaxial cables that were also used for cable TV.
  • Cable internet can provide high-speed connections, but speeds may vary based on the number of users in the area.

DSL (Digital Subscriber Line)

  • DSL uses existing telephone lines to provide internet access.
  • It is widely available in many areas, especially in rural locations.
  • DSL speeds can vary based on the distance from the service provider’s central office.
  • Many DSL connections are being replaced by faster fibre optic or cable options.

Satellite Internet

  • Satellite internet is often used
